Have you observed your characters in action, actively relating to the settings of your story? Do you know what your character would or would not do, and in what circumstances? Have you thought of why this plot is happening precisely to the people you are portraying, or how they embody the themes you are interested in exploring?

Character is story is a one-on-one consultancy/laboratory I have designed to help independent film directors who find themselves stuck somewhere in the writing process, or struggling with the overall development of their story. It teaches tools used in both fiction and documentary, and can be applied to develop stories that fall into either genre - but also, of course, hybrid films. This is also the approach I myself apply when writing films. It invites directors to carry out perspective-changing exercises to understand the unique inner workings of their plot, the philosophical investigation they are embarking on, and the character’s role in this investigation.
